Carthage offers a B.A. in Applied Engineering and B.S. in Engineering degrees, as well as two dual-degree opportunities with partner institutions, allowing students to earn two bachelor’s degrees in just five years.

Not quite sure what Engineering PATHWAY is right for you?

We’re here to help! Read our guide below or contact our faculty for more guidance.

Carthage’s Engineering Major       Dual-Degree Opportunities

Carthage’s Bachelor of Science in Engineering may be right for you if …

  • You want to pursue a career in engineering. Students who earn a Bachelor of Science in Engineering are placed on a path toward earning engineering licensure.
  • You want significant engineering project experience. Students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Engineering will work on two year-long engineering projects working with real people with real needs.
  • You want to learn engineering in a hands-on, project-based environment. Students study in an environment that communicates and facilitates their learning of engineering and the engineering process from idea conceptualization through prototyping, testing, and final delivery.
  • You want to graduate with significant engineering work experience. Students opt into a year-long cooperative learning experience — a paid employment opportunity with a local engineering firm — to gain a third year of real engineering experience upon graduation.
  • You want to study engineering and have time in your schedule to study abroad. Because none of the J-Term courses have required engineering coursework, all students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Engineering can opt into a J-Term course that has a study-abroad component.

Carthage’s Bachelor of Arts in Applied Engineering may be right for you if …

  • You’re excited about engineering but want to explore how the engineering mindset applies to other disciplines. Students who earn a Bachelor of Arts in Applied Engineering can earn multiple minors, easily work toward two degrees, or opt into an emphasis area connecting core engineering design and science coursework with other majors such as theatre or environmental science.
  • You want the flexibility to explore other academic interests. Students who earn a BA degree Applied Engineering can develop their own emphasis areas by blending courses from varied interests with the guidance of their academic advisory team.
  • You are excited about a major but want to explore that major in a technical context. Students who earn a BA Applied Engineering take classes in departments outside of engineering to learn varied skill sets leading to technical, non-engineering jobs such as technical writing, sales, and marketing.
  • You want to study engineering and have time in your schedule to study abroad. Because no required engineering coursework takes place over J-Term, all students pursuing a BA degree with a major in Engineering can opt into a J-Term course that has a study-abroad component.
  • You want to experience the benefits of attending a small school for your undergraduate education, such as multiple research opportunities, our athletics program, and a well-rounded liberal arts education.

Consider a 3+2 Program if …

  • You’re interested in engineering but want to have options in the liberal arts. At Carthage, dual-degree students major in a natural science and have the flexibility to explore or even switch entirely to another discipline.
  • You want to become a scientist or mathematician and earn an additional degree in engineering to boost your skills and expand your career options.
  • You know you want to specialize in a specific field, such as chemical engineering or environmental engineering. Dual degree students earn a B.S. degree in an engineering specialty from one of our partner schools and a B.A. degree in their Carthage major.
  • You want to experience both the benefits of attending a small school for your early undergraduate education and also the setting of a research university in your later college years.

Carthage has partnerships with Case Western Reserve University and Washington University, allowing students to earn a bachelor’s degree from Carthage and a bachelor’s degree in engineering from one of the two schools in just five years.
